The document laid the foundations of the Lithuanian World\nCommunity, Inc., brought together and provided the new meaning to thousands of\nLithuanian war refugees. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lithuanian\nCharter empowered Lithuanians, who after WWII once again found themselves\nhomeless, to continue to fight for Lithuania\u2019s independence and to strive to\nmaintain at all costs not only the family and kinship, but also the national\nconnection, so that \u201ceach countryman met abroad [would] be like brother.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lnb.lt\/lituanistika\/files\/2019\/05\/Lietuviu-charta-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3974\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lnb.lt\/lituanistika\/files\/2019\/05\/Lietuviu-charta-2.jpg 400w, https:\/\/blog.lnb.lt\/lituanistika\/files\/2019\/05\/Lietuviu-charta-2-250x167.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blog.lnb.lt\/lituanistika\/files\/2019\/05\/Lietuviu-charta-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 85vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption><br> <em>The Lithuanian Charter is exhibited at the National Library of Lithuania.<\/em> <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The publication\nof the Lithuanian Charter was Committee\u2019s response to the rapidly changing\nsituation of Lithuanian war refugees in post-war Germany and the future full of\nanxiety and uncertainty. At the end of the war, it became clear that Lithuania\nwould not regain its independence yet, therefore many refugees decided to take\nadvantage of the opportunity to immigrate to Canada, Australia, the United\nStates and other countries not affected by war. Prelate Mykolas Krupavi\u010dius,\nthe chairman of the Committee, and other members of the organization decided to\nestablish a Lithuanian community in each country and create one united\nLithuanian community abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>The actual\nLithuanian World Community, Inc. was founded in 1951. That year, the LWC\nInterim Organizing Committee was established. A few years later, in 1958, in\nNew York, the Seimas provided guidelines and structure for the new organization,\nelected its leadership, and passed the main document\u2014 the LWC Constitution,\nwhich is still used today without any major changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The LWC unites all\nLithuanian communities operating in different countries. Any person, who is\nLithuanian, can be its member. Krupavi\u010dius, who initiated the idea of \u200b\u200bthe LWC\nand wrote about it in the book <em>The Road of\nthe Lithuanian World Community<\/em>, stated that \u201c[t]he LWC has two goals: fundamental\nand random. The fundamental goal is to keep Lithuaniannes and the random goal\nis to regain freedom for Lithuania.\u201d These goals have been pursued throughout\nthe entire history of the LWC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite historic\nups and downs and the internal changes within the Lithuanian communities abroad,\nthe Lithuanian Charter still serves as a moral cause for many Lithuanians\nliving abroad.
