One of them was\nthe Central State Bookstore founded on December 20, 1919 which later would\nbecome the National Library of Lithuania. The most important functions of the\nBookstore in Kaunas were to collect mandatory copies of publications published\nin Lithuania and the books of persons who for one or another reason were no\nlonger their owners and of former tsarist institutions. In the first year, the Bookstore\nhoused approximately 18,000 books. Today the National Library of Lithuania has\n6.5 million of books. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>In 1963, the Bookstore\nwas moved to the capital Vilnius. In 1988, the Library was named after Martynas\nMa\u017evydas, the author of the first Lithuanian book. A year later, it was granted\nthe status of a National Library. Today it is also a public science and a\nparliamentary library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the\nreconstruction in 2016, the National Library of Lithuania invited its readers\nto new spaces offering many new services. A number of repositories have been\nmoved to the Internet so that every reader can find what he needs on his\ncomputer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today the\nNational Library of Lithuania collects and preserves published documents\nrelated to Lithuania, maintains bibliographic records, gathers the national archive\nof published documents, compiles and publishes national bibliographies and\nother bibliographic indexes, compiles catalogs and databases, assigns\ninternational standard numbers, performs the functions of the National\nDigitization Center and develops the Virtual Electronic Heritage System. The Library\nalso implements national, regional, and international projects, organizes\nexhibitions, literature evenings and other cultural events, promotes Lithuanian\nculture and science abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Events dedicated\nto the centennial were held throughout the year of 2019. On December 20th, the\nactual day of establishment of the National Library of Lithuania, the Library\norganized a special event\u2014an evening for Library\u2019s employees. During the event,\na number of them were recognized for their outstanding work, contribution, competencies\nand other merits.
